Yuzvendra Chahal has opened up about the profound impact MS Dhoni had on his bowling career, particularly during his early years representing India. Speaking on a recent podcast with former India opener Aakash Chopra, Chahal reflected on how Dhoni's presence behind the stumps transformed his approach to international cricket. The wrist spinner's candid remarks highlight the value of experienced leadership in shaping a young player's development on the field.

Chahal explained that Dhoni's ability to observe the game from his position as wicketkeeper-captain provided invaluable tactical support to India's bowlers. For wrist spinners like Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav, this guidance proved especially beneficial. Dhoni's experience allowed him to communicate real-time adjustments that made bowling decisions simpler and more effective during matches.

"50% mera or Kuldeep ka kaam asaan hi hojaata tha, kyunki ek toh wo picche se dekh rahe ki wicket kaisa chl rha hai with experience, piche se bol rahe ki stump pe hi rakhna zyada krne ki zarurat nahi hai, waise hi out ho jaate the batters." Chahal said on Aakash Chopra's YouTube channel.

The Centurion 2018 moment that changed everything

One specific instance stood out in Chahal's memory from India's second ODI against South Africa in Centurion during February 2018. In that match, Chahal took five wickets for 22 runs, a performance that demonstrated the effectiveness of Dhoni's tactical input. During JP Duminy's innings, Dhoni provided specific instructions that proved decisive in the batsman's dismissal.

"jab maine centurion me 2018 me five wickets liya tha, tab JP Duminy batting kar rahe the toh unhone (Dhoni) bol diya tha ki yuzi stump pe hi rakhiyo, pace apne hisaab se change krta rahiyo, wo dusri teesri ball me sweep maarne maine ball dhire dala or wo lbw out ho gaye," Chahal said.

South Africa was restricted to 118 in that match, with Kuldeep Yadav also contributing three wickets to India's bowling effort. India won the encounter by nine wickets, showcasing the combined effectiveness of the bowling unit under Dhoni's guidance. The performance underscored how Dhoni's tactical acumen translated into tangible results on the field.

Chopra asked the leggie whether Dhoni’s retirement affected him and Kuldeep, he acknowledged that his absence was felt but he had already prepared the young bowlers to make their own decisions.

"Umhone hame mature bna diya tha ki hame pta h kya krna h but han definitely fark toh pda hi tha but unhone mujhe or Kuldeep ko prepare kr diya tha," said Chahal.
